FAQ

YouTube thumbnail ideas: questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

16:9, usually exported at 1280 by 720 pixels. Generate at 16:9 so nothing gets cropped, and remember that the video length appears in the bottom right corner, so keep text and faces away from it.

Why do thumbnails use such exaggerated expressions?

Thumbnails are seen small and fast, so a big, readable emotion stops the scroll better than a neutral face. Ask for one clear expression, such as surprise, excitement or doubt, and keep it honest to what the video actually delivers.

Should I let the AI write the thumbnail text?

Better not. Ask for empty space and add two to four big words in an editor afterwards; image models often misspell text, and using your own font keeps every thumbnail on your channel consistent.
